Description
The world stood still for a long time in the spring of 2020. Because of Covid-19 and the measures against further spread, everyone lived in their own bubble. For me, these bubbles represent the people around me who I could not actually see during that period. Family, friends, acquaintances, passers-by, without them my world was a lot smaller. For me a period in which I stayed at home, fortunately was able to work from home and I painted a lot. This is one of the paintings I made in the spring of 2020.
Earlier, in 2019, I also made a work with dots on circles on circles. When I wake up, this is the first painting I see, as long as it still lives with me. ‘Bubbles’ was created by using the paint that was left from other paintings. The paint I use to create the different backgrounds, because for the small dots I use other paint, paint that you can almost drip. Over the course of months, many circles were created, until I decided that the canvas was ready for the dots.
I love circles, however imperfect and for me a dot is the ultimate circle. The idea of infinity, that there is no beginning and no end, really appeals to me. For me, the circles and the spaces around the circles symbolise the people in my life, and the connections between people that persist even though they cannot meet in person.
