Description
I made this painting while thinking of Australia and the huge bushfires that raged over there.
It was already clear at the end of 2019 that the ruthless bushfires in southeast Australia caused a lot of damage. But at the start of the new year, horrible images came into everybody’s home through social media and news. But we also heard stories from family and friends living in the affected areas. Millions of animals and dozens of people lost their lives. Fortunately there was positive news as well, from people and organizations who put their heart and soul into the rescue of animals.
Fundraising campaign for Australia
With our company Redline Golf, we initiated a campaign in January to raise money for Australia among Dutch, Belgian and German golfers. For every pitch fork sold – a small tool that every golfer has to carry with him or her while playing golf – we donated € 7.50 to Sleepy Burrows. Within a week we achieved our set goal of 200 pitch forks sold. You can read why we chose this goal and what we were able to donate in the special page on our website.
Symbolism
I started this painting in the middle, with the black land, burnt by the bushfires. From the inside out, I restored the land until finally, on the edges, some greenery was visible again. Yes, the land will recover in the future and many animals will inhabit the land again. But to reflect on the devastating effects of the bush fires, I used glitter in the background, symbolic of all the lost lives.
