Description
Autumn 2021. Daily life is still largely determined by COVID-19 and the measures taken to prevent its further spread. Connection is less and less obvious but still oh so important. I made this LAYERS painting with beautiful autumn coloured layers of circles.
At the same time, I was working on another painting with layers of circles on circles. I wanted to see how different -or alike- two paintings would turn out when I applied circles on circles on both canvasses, with the same colours in the lower layers. The difference between them was the amount of colours I’d use to paint the dots in the top layer. For this painting I used three colours and the idea for the other canvas was to use only one colour for the dots.
Planning and doing is not the same thing and by working on one painting I changed the plan for the other painting. This was mainly because I saw that I was losing the beautiful colours of the bottom layers as I applied the dots. I finished this painting and the other canvas is still in the studio, waiting for new inspiration.
There is also a cat’s paw in this painting, in memory of Sambal, her sister Bloem and their mother Amber, who we sadly no longer have with us. They were with us for 17-18 years and will be dearly missed.
I love circles and a dot is of course the ultimate circle. The idea of infinity, there is no beginning and no end, appeals to me greatly. The circles and the spaces around them symbolise for me the people in my life, and the connections between people and animals that continue to exist even though they cannot meet in real life.
